The tourist train ‘Le Papillon’ travels at a sedate pace through the landscape on its way from Axat to near Rivesaltes. It follows the beautiful Valley East towards the Mediterranean.
Also recommended is ‘Le Train Jaune’ (Yellow train) which runs for 63km between Villefranche and Latour de Carol, through spectacular mountain scenery
No visit would be complete without a trip to the spectacular walled city of Carcassonne. The city originally stood on the French Spanish border, but the Cite began to decline when Roussillon became part of France, and the threat receded. Rebuilt in the 19th century, it is one of Europe’s largest fortifications.
The Languedoc is Cathar country. Simon de Montfort led the Catholic crusaders against the Cathars, who fled to the fortresses that stood on the border of France and Spain. Our favourites of these spectacular castles include Peyreperteuse, Puilaurens, Queribus and Montsegur.
